Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter History

Our Beginning

Kappa Iota Zeta was chartered September 15, 1980 in East Point, Georgia by: Lacy Alford, Carolyn Austin, Leila Coleman, Haroldine Crowder, Cornelia Glass-Harvey, Ola Hill, Thelma Duncan Lester, Marynette Lovejoy, Bettye Shelling, Jacqueline Terry, and Gwendolyn Wyatt.

Following the 1980 Grand Boule ln Memphis, Tennessee, several Sorors of the Epsilon Zeta Chapter were elated about the growing number of newly chartered chapters. Epsilon Zeta Chapter was the largest chapter ln Georgia with over one hundred members. Chapters with over one hundred members were placed in the Top Ten and recognized at each Boule. National President Edith V. Francis and Regional Director Eunice Thomas strongly advocated growth within the organization. This occurs by chapter expansion, reclamation, and retention.

Being a part of the largest chapter ln Georgia was exciting. However, chartering a new chapter would also be exciting and continue growth within the Sisterhood. With deep thoughts and extensive research, we consulted Regional Director Eunice Thomas about the rules and guidelines. Fortunately, our research indicated that we were within the guidelines to charter a chapter ln the Metro area. However, only one chapter per city ls permitted. We selected East Point, Georgia and submitted our application.
