Kappa Iota Zeta Signature Programs

Annually, Kappa Iota Zeta hosts an array of community and social action programs while still finding time to fellowship within our chapter, the Atlanta Blue and White family and the greater Greek community. We dedicate our precious time, talent and resources to support our five signature programs: Hall of Fame Gala, Lovejoy Book Scholarship, Miss Blue Revue Pageant, Tea with Z, and the Stork's Nest Blitz. Additionally, we implement many Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) projects as outlined by our national organization.

In 1992, Kappa Iota Zeta, along with the Epsilon Zeta chapter, decided during Finer Womanhood Observance (last week of February and the month of March) to induct two members from each chapter into the Hall of Fame for outstanding service to Zeta. The event has evolved into a formal gala hosted by KIZ. Along with the Hall of Fame inductions, the gala recognizes outstanding contributions made by new and veteran members over the course of the sorority year as well as the support of our external partners.

We are pleased to announce our 2023 Hall of Fame Inductees: Cindy Givens and Cheryl Johnson.

Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter is proud to support Zeta's principle of scholarship through the Marynette B. Lovejoy Book Scholarship Program (MBL Scholarship). The MBL Scholarship program awards female high school graduates, past MBL Scholarship recipients and graduate Zetas with financial assistance and allows Kappa Iota Zeta to continue the legacy of literacy left by beloved chapter member Marynette B. Lovejoy. Funds for the scholarship are from individual donations and the Miss Blue Revue Pageant held semi-annually by the chapter.

Mrs. Marynette B. Lovejoy was an original charter member of Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter. She was an educator in the Georgia Public School System for 38 years. She was most respected in the community as a noted Librarian and Community Activist. This esteemed member of Zeta Phi Beta for 57 years, passed away in February of 1998 and Zeta member Tecia McKay suggested that the KIZ scholarship program be re-named in her honor. Mrs. Lovejoy loved children and books and the KIZ chapter members were happy to have the scholarship program carry her name in memory of her great work and accolades. Mrs. Lovejoy was married to John D. Lovejoy for 48 years; had four children - John, Juanita (Gwen), Sylvia and Jenelsia; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.

Premiering in 1995, the Miss Blue Revue Pageant is a bi-annual pageant and fundraising event for girls ages 4 – 12. In 2008, the pageant also included a crowning of Miss Blue Idol for exceptional talent. Funds collected are used to support our Marynette Bonner Lovejoy Book Scholarship, which allows KIZ to financially assist deserving young women in the Atlanta area as they pursue higher education. In fact, several scholarship award recipients have been previous Miss Blue Revue contestants.

Leading up to the pageant, the Blue Revue contestants participate in "BlueTastic-BlueFabulous-BlueSational Saturdays" designed to instill pride, self esteem, honesty and integrity. Contestants also learn respect for themselves and others, develop skills and a sense of responsibility. Past activities have included the following: A Homemade Ice Cream Making Social, National Black Storytellers Conference (in Atlanta) trip Jewelry Making Party, Runway Modeling Workshop and Fashion Show Mother Daughter Tea, and Stepping Workshop and Step Show.

"Tea with Z” is an original and signature event of Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter. It was created in 1994 by Jacqueline Ward-Williams, Sandra Harris and Erma Killings. The tea pays homage to the life of Zeta member and author Zora Neale Hurston. In addition to celebrating Zora, a tea allows the chapter to go back in time to celebrate the finer things in life.

Held on a Sunday afternoon, the atmosphere consists of soft music, petit fours, elegant cookies, china, lace, and a sampling of teas and other light refreshments. Each year, the chapter invites a noted guest, preferably from the literary community to give their perspective of Zora Neale Hurston. The annual program has expanded to include a Royal Tea Pot Competition, a Hat Competition (renamed HATtitude) and an etiquette session.

Stork's Nest is a national program of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated established in 1972 in Atlanta, Georgia. This endeavor was conceived by Zeta member, Evelyn Brown. Stork’s Nest is aligned with the sorority’s community service initiative Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) as well as the March of Dimes. Currently, there are over 175 Stork’s Nests nationwide that have proudly served over 28,000 women.

The purpose of Stork’s Nest is to encourage economically disadvantaged women to seek prenatal care within the first trimester of their pregnancy. Research has shown that mothers who seek this care decrease the potential for birth defects and infant mortality. Stork’s Nest promotes prenatal care participation and positive health choices during pregnancy through two components—incentives and education.

In 1998, the Stork’s Nest Blitz Baby Item Collection Drive was created by Kappa Iota Zeta chapter member, Tonya Cook. The blitz aides the chapter in gathering Items needed to stock the Nest for its incentive program. An assortment of newborn baby items, such as diapers, bottles, receiving blankets, shirts and more are collected and assembled on site during the event into layettes. These layettes are later distributed to expectant mothers who participate in the Stork’s Nest program.
